Scientific Name: Heterochongrinae sp
Reef Compatibility: Yes (needs specialized care)
Minimum Tank Size: 40 gallons
Max Size: 14 inches
Approximate Purchase Size: 5 to 8 inches
Notes: These small eels live in burrows on the sea floor and get their name from their practice of poking their heads from their burrows while most of their bodies remain hidden. Since they tend to live in groups, the many eel heads "growing" from the sea floor resemble the plants in a garden. The Garden Eel should be kept in a 40 gallon or larger aquarium with at least 6 inches of sand, a gentle current, and without aggressive tank mates. A tight-fitting lid is required to prevent escape.
The Garden Eel diet consists of meaty foods and live foods such as freshwater ghost shrimp or small feeder fish.
