Notes: If you are looking for a hermit crab that will help keep your aquarium tidy, then this is the one for you. It's bright red body and yellow eyestalks make it a stunning addition to any marine aquarium. Compared to other Hermits, the Scarlet Hermit is known to be reef safe. The Scarlet Hermit Crabs staple diet consists of all forms of algae but will also take aquarium foods. A bit larger than its blue leg and red leg cousins, but is extremely peaceful.
The Scarlet Hermit is a small species of hermit crab with a bright red body and yellow eyestalks that lives in the Atlantic and Caribbean Sea. It grows to a length of about 1.2 in. The limbs and pincers are smooth and hairless, and the left chela is slightly larger than the right one; the abdomen is unarmored and is concealed in the recesses of the gastropod mollusk shell that protects it. The color of this hermit crab is bright red except for the antennae, which are deep red, and the elongated eyestalks, which are yellow. This hermit crab is suitable for an invertebrate-friendly reef aquarium where it consumes algae, including filamentous, hair, and slime algae as well as cyanobacteria making them beneficial to having them in your tank as they help keep it clean
While widely considered to be reef safe it is advised with caution as it may nip at coral. It may also attack and kill snails for it shells. Be sure to have Empty Shells on hand for them to move into as they grow.
This item is held in an invertebrate only system.
